TFtember: Transformers#4

"The Last Stand" the Transformers#4 (March 1985) with credits to Jim Salicrup (script), Frank Springer (pencils), Ian Akin and Brian Gravey (inks), Nelson Yomtov (colors), John Workman (letters), and Bob Budiansky (editor)

Remember how the Autobots were mad at Sparkplug last issue? Yeah, they're still mad. Sparkplug and Buster opt to leave, but Jazz blasts a wall of flame around them, causing Sparkplug to have a massive heart attack.

Ratchet opts to take Sparkplug to the hospital. While this is going on, Huffer rushes to talk to Optimus. It seems shortly after they crashed on Earth, the Decepticon Shockwave arrived on Earth. The Ark's computer released five Autobot warriors to stop him, tracking to a region the human would later dub 'the Savage Land'. They quickly send a probe to the Antarctic.

Sparkplug, now at the hospital, recalls when he was a POW during the Korean War and how he sabotaged the things he worked on...

With no more fuel, the Autobots give all their remaining energy to the last five Autobots and prepare for battle, while in the Savage Land, a massive purple hand crushes the probe.

The final battle rages, but even though the Decepticons have the superior numbers, they soon start to shut down. Remember Sparkplug's flashback?

With the Autobots on their last legs, they declare victory at long last and how they owe everything to Sparkplug. Then Shockwave kills them all, apparently.

Man, it would be funny if this really was the last issue, wouldn't it? But seriously, the Autobots look more desperate but the victory is hard won, but when Shockwave shows up it does reek at a last minute swerve. They did talk about 'the Decepticon's mightiest' is missing so it's not a total deus ex machina but if you skipped that part it does seem to come out of nowhere.
