Shark Week: Shark Zone (2003)

Shark Zone (2003), dir. Danny Lerner, Martien Holdings A.V.V./Millenium Films

And thus we end Shark Week 2022.

A group of divers goes exploring a shipwreck off the coast. Pity a group of great whites decides to use the same said ship as a hangout. Only diver survives.

Ten years later, Jimmy (Dean Cochran) is doing better. He's married, has a son, and a crippling fear of sharks. That last one might be a problem for Mr. Volkoff (Velizar Binev), who wishes to hire Jimmy to go diving around that shipwreck from earlier, as he is convinced there is gold hidden in the ship.

Jimmy turns him down. Mayor Cortell (Alan Austin) has a better job for Jimmy through. He wants him to patrol the beaches and keep an eye out for sharks. Jimmy does that but seems the mayor should have been more specific. Jimmy watches as the sharks swarm the beach and eat quite a few beachgoers.

The mayor then has another job for Jimmy. Get some pals together and kill every shark they can. Jimmy agrees. The sharks, however, are a bit more on the ball than Jimmy and soon Jimmy is once again the sole survivor.

Mr. Volkoff asks Jimmy a second time to dive for him. Jimmy refuses a second time. More shark attacks happen, and Volkoff asks a third time. He also kidnaps Jimmy's son, just to make Jimmy doesn't turn him down a third time.

So now we're in a caper film with sharks. Will Jimmy save his son? Will Volkoff have some sort of karmic comeuppance? Will the film stop lifting footage from Shark Attack 3?

Bottom of the barrel really, but there plenty of shark attacks, so the title isn't a lie.

Shark Week: Red Water (2003)

Red Water (2003), dir. Charles Robert Camer, New Line Television/Sony Pictures Television

Nearing the end, so why not have the highest rated program on TBS?

Shark Week: Megalodon (2002)

Megalodon (2002), dir. Pat Corbitt, 100% Entertainment/Corbitt Digital Films, LLC

Also titled Sharkzilla and not officially released until 2004, so you know we're in for a good time.

Millionaire Peter Brazier (Robin Sachs) has just built a fancy new oil rig deep in the Artic Circle. He wants to show it off, so he invites reporter Christen Giddings (Leighanne Littrell) and a team to come on up and check the place out.

Things start out okay enough, but the drill hits something. A something that turns out to be a lost world filled with prehistoric things, including a sixty-foot long monster known as a megalodon. Natrually things go wrong in a hurry. Can the monster be stopped?

Poor on every level. Everyone gets underlit and the sets feel more amaturish the longer the films drags on.

Shark Week: Sharkman (2001)

Sharkman (2001), dir. Brian Meece, Spin Pictures, LLC

There seems to be some confusion about this flick. From what little I heard Jeffery Combs is the sole bright spot; so imagine my shock when I fail to find him.

Tim (Bob Oschack) is a cartoonist. He tries, he really does, but his ideas aren't helping him get ahead. He makes a wish that his character Sharkman (Matt Lacey) were alive.

Then he is! A poorly made CGI version of him, in any event.

Just dumb all around, and a complete waste of William Forsythe.

Monday, July 25, 2022

Shark Week: Shark Hunter (2001)

Shark Hunter (2001), dir. Matt Codd, Bright Ideas/City Heat Productions/Shark Hunter Productions

Looks like the rest of this week will be focusing on increasingly cheaper flicks.

Sometime ago, a boat containing a family was attacked by something in the water. The son was the only survivor. Present day, and the son grown up into Dr. Spencer Northcut (Antonio Sabato, Jr.).

Northcut's dream is a massive underwater research station. He finally finished it, but before he can unveil his other dream project, the station loses contact with the surface. Fearing the worst, they take his other dream project, a massive sub, down to the depths to investigate.

Turns out he should have dreamed bigger, as the sub is dwarfed by none other than a megalodon. This of course is also the same creature that attacked his family's boat all those years ago. Can Dr. Northcut stop this beast?

Shot in Bulgaria, and you can tell. The CGI for the time isn't the worst thing ever but it isn't the best.

Shark Week: Shark Attack 2 (2000)

Shark Attack 2 (2000), dir. David Worth, Millennium Films/Nu World Servies/Do Productions

You know, when Casper Van Dien won't return your calls, maybe you should rethink some things?

Remember the sharks from the last film? Seems they missed a few and some got into the waters off of Cape Town, South Africa. Sisters Amy (Caroline Bruins) and Samantha (Nikita Ager) discover this a bit late, fatally so in Amy's case.

A week later, Dr. Nick Harris (Thorsten Kaye) and his team manage to capture one of these super sharks. Dissection, maybe? Nope-they're selling that sucker to a Sea World knock off.

With shades of Jaws 3-D, the shark eats some people then promptly escapes. Harris and Samantha team up and they find not only their missing beastie but only a group of similar super sharks. And the Sea World knock-off is hosting a surfing competition nearby!

So they call in the Discovery Channel. Seriously, Harris confront the mayor, but they can't close the beach! So he summons Roy Bishop (Daniel Alexender)-Extreme Aussie and TV show host , to handle the issue.

Can they stop the sharks in time? Will the CGI ever start looking convincing?

Dumb. Hell, when you can't even use Ernie Hudson right, why bother?

Why? Colonel Red is now regretting bringing the madman from Truth or Consequences onto his set.

And December will see the return of the art jam and some of the odds and bobs I've seen.
