TFtember: Transformers#2

"Power Play!" the Transformers#2 (November 1984) with credits to Bill Mantlo (plot), Jim Salicrup (script), Frank Springer (pencils), Kim DeMulder (inks), Nelson Yomtov (colors), Janice Chiang (letters), and Bob Budiansky (editor)

Part Two in a four issue miniseries!

The Decepticons do a hit and run on a half finished nuclear power plant, leaving the workers dazed and terrorized.

Meanwhile, a dying Bumblebee tells the confused Witwickys who and what he is. Sparkplug manages to fix the scout up. Buster goes off with the alien robot to find some fuel for the rest of the Autobots. On the way, Buster spots his girlfriend Jesse and his unnamed pal (seriously, the kid is never named. Fan works call him O). Buster introduces Bumblebee to his friends, unware that O has picked up a certain cassette tape...

Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots are debating what to do. They need fuel, the Earthlings have plenty. Should they just take it or give up their technology in exchange? Bumblebee's signal breaks up the talks and a group heads to Sparkplug's garage. Sparkplug agrees to help convert gas into something the Autobots can use but then the Decepticons crash the party.

The fight is fever pitched but despite the Autobots' best efforts Sparkplug is kidnapped by the Decepticons! Buster pleads with them to help, but that fight used up all their energy, leaving them helpless!

Funny aside, this books marks the Transformes as being in the Marvel Universe as Jesse listens to Dazzler on her radio.

Pretty good and we see more character development, with even the Autobots as being more shades of gray and not the white hats the cartoon often showed.
