Background: What's the point of being the best when gods roam the Earth?
Paul was a rookie cop when he was spotted by Bob Backlund. Backlund saw potential in the officer and offered him a spot on the Superstars. No doubt had Backlund remained team leader Orndorff would have had a large role in the team, possibly even being leader himself.
...or he would have been, had Hulk Hogan not shown up. Lifting a barbell? Nice, but Hogan just bench-pressed a car. And so on and so on; when the press started to refer Mr. Wonderful as Hogan's sidekick, well, that was the final straw.
Orndorff's attack on Hogan sent shockwaves through the world and their final battle had the world's attention. Orndorff eventually fired Heenan and rejoined the Superstars, but was viewed with suspicion. He eventually quit the team and opened a bowling alley.
