Background: Not every one profiled is a hero or monster. Some are just folks doing their jobs. In Gene Okerlund's case, he was an on the spot reporter. Wherever in the studio or in the field, Mean Gene would be there to give the folks at home a glimpse of their heroes.
Starting out in radio in Minneapolis, Gene took an offer to move to New York City and he never looked back. He was a natural fit for the hard hitting news and showed no fear at either the Iron Sheik's rampages or Roddy Piper's sarcasm.
He stayed in up North until 1993 when he got a better deal to do the same thing down in Atlanta. Heading South, he stayed there until he semi-retired in 2001. After that he moved back north and only occasionally did the news.
For thousands of viewers at home, "Mean" Gene was the voice that showed them what was happening in the world.
