Shark Week: Beyond the Reef (1979)

Beyond the Reef (1979) dir. Frank C. Clarke, Dino de Laurentiis Company

Slightly different take this time out.

Tikoyo (Dayton Ka'ne) lives a peaceful life in Bora Bora. One day, he finds an orphaned tiger shark. Naming it Manidu after his mentor (Oliverio Maciel Diaz), Tikoyo also has Diana (Maren Jensen), but she leaves to continue school in America.

She comes back some years later, now fully grown. Tikoyo notices it, and so does Manidu, who seems to be trying to ship them together. Yeah, romance via shark.

Since the shark isn't the villain, who is? That would be Jeff (Keahi Farden), Diana's scumbag brother. He doesn't care for a 'native' making eyes at his sister, but he does care for the massive black pearls that happen to be in the lagoon where Manidu swims.

Surprisingly heartwarming? I mean, the shark is played more like a dog than a shark. Seriously, it even wakes Tikoyo up in the mornings to go play.
