Shark Week: Aatank (1998)

Aatank (1996) dirs. Prem Lalwani and Desh Mukherjee, Bemisal Films, Ltd.

Been doing this blog a while, and I've never done a Bollywood film? Time to rectify that...

Jesu (Dharmendra) and Peter (Vinod Mehra) are two fisherman, living the dream in a small seaside village. Sure, local boss Alphonso (Amjad Khan) rules with an iron fist, but other than that things aren't so bad.

When some massive black pearls are found off the coast, everyone is thrilled, Alphonso most of all. He dispatches divers to scour the ocean. Scour he orders, never mind if you disturb anything down there!

Peter meanwhile, finds love with Suzy (Nafisa Ali). Everything is going great, at least until she disappears. A showdown is brewing...

This is only a brief review, because this film has so much going on it becomes a bit muddled. There's Peter's quest for revenge, Jesu trying to take a child away from an unfit mother, and a government agent infiltrating Alphonso's gang. For a good stretch of time we don't even see the shark but for the last fifteen is when everything builds to a head.
