Calls for Cthulhu (1996) dir. Brand Gamblin
Stepping back to the shorts for a minute, and this is a short for sure.
Cthulhu (Brand Gamblin) is a terror beyond comprehension and he waits until the moment when the stars align to make his return upon the world of men. But until that time? He's got calls to take.
Yup, just a puppet short (with Tori Spelling of all people) but cute in its way.
Shark Attack (1999) dir. Bob Misorowski, Martien Holdings A.V.V./Millennium Films/Sharkey Productions
Winding down, so let's take a look at a direct to video offering.
Great White (1998) dir. Zac Reeder, Retrovision
A straight to video flick?
Aatank (1996) dirs. Prem Lalwani and Desh Mukherjee, Bemisal Films, Ltd.
Been doing this blog a while, and I've never done a Bollywood film? Time to rectify that...
The Shark Hunter (1979) dir. Enzo G. Castellari, Tei Film International/Arca Films
Another Jaws knockoff? Not quite...
Beyond the Reef (1979) dir. Frank C. Clarke, Dino de Laurentiis Company
Slightly different take this time out.
Sharks' Treasure (1975), dir. Cornel Wilde, Symbol Productions, Inc.
And we're back with another dip back into the briny deep.
Cthulhu Wore Tennis Shoes (1996) dir. Lesley Matheson, UCLA Enigma Sci-Fi Club
Another short that's dang short.
A young man sees a campus flyer promising free pizza, so naturally he goes there. Pity he didn't read the fine print, as the group is actually looking for a human sacrifice to the Old Ones.
Pretty amateur all the way through but the spirit is there.
Ok, brief update.
The UWF rewrite is over for the year. Next year I'll focus on the next set of shows leading up to the next PPV.
Still working on the Summer of Love(craft) every Friday. Next week is Shark Week, so expect a new shark review everyday starting Sunday through Saturday.
August will be more general reviews, but September? September will see a brand new feature.
Disappointed by the recent MK film? Well, here's something that may do nothing at all to help that.

Rampage fallout! Herb Abrams comes out and thanks the viewers at home for their support. The next show will be St. Valentine's Day Massacre, next year in February!

Lou Albano sits down with Wendi Richter. She was happy that she won, but she wants one more piece of Luna Vachon. She also wants to do more. Women's wrestling has been dying in the US and she wants to bring it to the main event. That's why she's been scouting talent all over the globe with the intent to bring them here to the UWF!
We get a video package for a new tag team set to make their debut next week: Sabu and Axe Bomber!
Lou then sits down with Paul Orndorff. He's also happy that he won but unlike a few fellows he could mention, he doesn't intend to hog the main event. No, he wants to give people at chance. He's in the best shape of his life and he's going to bring it to the mat in every match. Jerry Lawler comes out and takes him up on that offer. Herb Abrams comes out and makes it official-next week!
The Outsider (1994) dir. Aaron Vanek, Beyond Books
Dang short, even by the standards of the other films we've been showcasing this year.
A man wakes up. That isn't unusual but what is out of the ordinary is that the man can't recall anything as he walks through an unfamiliar place.
Memories come back though, memories of a woman and of violence. What kind of picture do they paint and will be the man continue to be an outsider?
Not terrible but an average short.

All of sudden, David Strong rushes out with a steel chair and starts wailing on Larry with Bob Orton, Cactus Jack, and the Bounty Hunter beat up Super Ninja.
David yanks Red's microphone away. Why is he doing this? Well, as much as he hates to admit it, Larry has a point. There can't be 2 living legends. And since Larry isn't his old man, he'll do the right thing and step aside, right?
"Hell no!" Larry tackles David to the ground as security comes out, along with Bruno Sammartino himself!
Bruno tells the stunned crowd that his son that he discussed it with Herb and the main event of Rampage? Oh, it will be for the UWF North American title and it WILL be in a steel cage, but now it's going to be a three way fight! David VS Orndorff VS Larry Zayszko!

Red's Corner
Colonel Red, with Super Ninja at his side, is pleased as punch to bring a fellow countryman out here to the blasted hellscape known as LA. A man who has worn gold everywhere he's been and he has no doubt he'll do the same here. The legend of Memphis, the successor to the King himself, Jerry Lawler!
Jerry comes out with his usual fanfare. He talks trash about Paul Orndorff, namely that he was little more than a glorified sidekick to a certain balding orange hobgoblin back east. He could take the title easy, but since Mr. Abrams was kind enough to fly him out to California and since all the posters for Rampage are promising Orndorff, well, that wouldn't be fair would it? So he'll just fight whoever's the champ at the next show.
Orndorff storms out but Super Ninja blocks him. Jerry just sits back and talks smack. Herb comes out. he agrees to Jerry's terms, but since Orndorff has so much energy to burn, how about Paul Orndorff VS Super Ninja right now?

Pickman's Model (1981) dir. Cathy Welch, Lurker Films
We've seen this story before, but this short from 1981 does flesh things out a bit.
Student William Thurber (Mac Williams) is studying the occult when he discovers the work of noted reclusive artist Richard Pickman (Marc Mahon). The more he studies the art and his increasingly grotesque work, the more obsessed he becomes. How does Pickman draw such vivid horrors? Is his imagination really that good?
Not bad but aside from a few new characters they really don't add that much, but then again this being one of Lovecraft's stronger tales they don't need to do that much.

Reseda Country Club
Announcers: Craig DeGeorge and Lou Albano
We open with a recap of David Strong (nee Sammartino) beating his father and leaving with John Tolos.
Craig and Lou Albano are solemn and grim. Craig: "Folks, we've been having constant updates on Commissioner Sammartino's condition. After the brutal assault on him last week, medics managed to get him to the local ER."
Lou almost explodes on DeGeorge. "They don't wanna here about that, they want to know what that crumbbum of a son is doing, and why isn't UWF doing anything about it?"
Craig reaches to his ear. "Owner Herb Abrams has been keeping an eye on the situation and promises a decision soon, but right now we go to Colonel Red". Red's Corner where we see the newly dubbed David Strong, decked out in a suit. John Tolos is next to him. Bob Orton and Cactus Jack are behind him, tag belts on their shoulders. The Bounty Hunter stands off the side.
Red: "Boys, it does me proud to see someone who sees what they want and goes out and gets it! Mister Strong, what are your plans next?"
David smirks and looks at the camera. "Well Colonel, I'm glad you asked. I'm new man now, no more ties to the past. So what you saw last week? That was only a preview. Now, I'm not going to cost on a name or demand anything because of something I did ten years ago. No, I promise, right here and now before you the viewing audience, that once I get my ten wins I WILL be taking the North American title. Orndorff, I don't care how much you train, how many vitamins or prays you use, I will be the next North American champ."

After the match, a dazed David takes the microphone from Lou Albano as his father comes down the ring. "Last week I made a promise. I said if I lost, David Sammartino would never set into the ring again!" He hugs his father as John Tolos, Cactus Jack, and Bob Orton come out.
Before the horrified crowd, David then knees his father in the gut and piledrives him to the mat as Orton and Cactus rush the ring with chairs. Orndorff is knocked down and out as the heels clear the ring.
David turns his venom onto the crowd. "You jackasses think I wanted this? No, all I wanted to make my old man proud! But no matter what, all I hear is Bruno this, Bruno that, you only got onto the card cause of your old man. I busted my ASS to get where I am, but no, everything is about that old man bleeding out here. So yeah, David Sammartino isn't going to be on the card any more. I'm David Strong and I'm taking what's mine!" He picks up the North American title and poses with it before tossing atop of a still out Orndorff.
