Underwater (2020)

Underwater (2020) dir. William Eubank, TSG Entertainment/Cherin Entertainment

Well, this is embarrassing. I admit, watching the trailer and the pre release info, I took this for nothing more than a slight reworking of Leviathan or Deep Star Six. Which it still is I suppose, but there was an element that no one mentioned, namely a certain old fellow often resting in his city...

Down at the bottom of the Mariana Trench lies Kelper 822, a massive underwater mining operation. Things run smoothly for the crew until an earthquake hits. Engineer Norah Price (Kristen Stewart) and two drillers, Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie) and Paul (TJ Miller) manage to escape, but it looks like the rest of the escape pods were already launched.

Captain Lucien (Vincent Cassel) is still there and together they manage to find biologist Emily (Jessica Henwick) and  the other engineer Liam (John Gallagher, Jr.). Kelper 822 is pretty scrap metal at this point, so the captain gets the idea to slip on their pressure suits and hoof it about a mile across the ocean floor to Roebuck 841, another station. Good idea!

Except Rodrigo's helmet had a little crack...bad idea.

They manage to get to the base, finding some of the escape pods. Looking over the body finds them a most unusual species inside the body, which doesn't bode well for the rest of the crew.

From there the crew gets whittled down until we're down to a few. Turns out when you go drilling into the ground, you really should be more careful about what you summon...

Not too bad? I missed this in theaters. The performances are pretty good and the effects are top notch. Not the usual Lovecraft fare but the appearance of the big guy is surprising, more Godzilla than elder god. Which isn't necessary a bad thing.
