Shark Week: Night of the Sharks (1988)

Night of the Sharks (1988) dir. Anthony Richmond, Amanecer Films/Belma Cinematografica/Cinematografica Jalisco S.A./Italian International Film/Koala Cinemtografica/Motion Picture Corporation of America/Rai 1/Victor Films S.A.

Three countries working in unison and this was the best they could come up with?

James Ziegler (Carlo Mucari) has been waiting his whole life for one big break. Well, he finally gets it! Yup, years of stalking Mr. Rosentski (John Steiner) have finally paid off when he wiretaps Rosentski and the President of the United States have a far too friendly chat.

Does he go to the news? The authorities? Nope, he decides to offer the recording to Rosentski directly in exchange for 2 million in diamonds. Rosentski has a counter offer-he'll have his enforcer (Stelio Candelli) kill him and take the recording.

James manages to steal the diamonds though and hightails it towards his beach-bum brother David (Treat Williams). Pity his plane, and his body, are shot full of holes. James manages to crash his plane near David's shack in Cancun and give a brief exposition before dying.

This puts David in quite a pickle. Along with his best pal/partner Paco (Antonio Fargas) and his silent partner Cyclops (a rather large shark), David is at a loss at what to do. His ex-wife Liz (Janet Agren), however, is contacted by Rosentski and made a handsome offer: A clearing of all her debts if she can help recover his diamonds (and the recording).

The enforcer, however, decides to add another Ziegler brother to his gunbelt and starts gathering a strike team of his own. David, meanwhile, makes it clear he ain't running. He hates guns but has no problem with knives or sharks for that matter.

Not as bad as I thought but more 80's action than a shark film. Cyclops could easily be replaced with a dog and it wouldn't change too much.
