Shark Week: Mission of the Shark (1991)

Mission of the Shark: The Saga of the USS Indianapolis (1991), dir. Robert Iscove, Richard Maynard Productions/Fries Entertainment

Getting back to the made for television movies portion of Shark Week, and what better than the first film to take a look at the ill-fated USS Indianapolis? Cinema fans might recall Quint's speech from Jaws

Captain Charles McVay (Stacy Keach) has been ordered to deliver a special package to the island of Tinian. The delivery is a success, but on the way back to port an enemy sub puts two torpedoes in her hull, sending the mighty ship to the bottom. A good portion of the crew escape sinking, but now they're adrift in the Pacific with almost no supplies and what they don't realize is that no distress call had been sent.

Then the sharks come a'calling...

For a made for TV flick, pretty good. There's scores of recognizable faces from various television shows, like Richard Thomas and David Caruso and it does stick pretty close to the actual event. A bit light in terms of scares, but the focus is on history and not horror.
