Shark Week: Shark's Paradise (1986)

Shark's Paradise (1986) dir. Michael Jenkins, Hanna-Barbera Australia/McElroy & McElroy

Well, this is a first. What we have here is not an Australian made for TV movie, but also one from the Aussie branch of Hanna-Barbera.

Much like Jaws, this one kicks off with a shark attack. A drunken partier falls off a yacht and is promptly munched by a shark.

So far, so good; this one veers off when the police get a tape taking credit for the death, with the threat of more. Rather than dismissing this, the chief (John Paramor) takes this serious. Not serious enough to assign a good cop though. No, he assigns Inspector Rossiter (Dennis Miller), who in turn assigns Don Johnson's Aussie cousin, Rod (David Reyne), on account of him not looking like a cop.

He also decides two con artists would be the best help he could assign Rod, so he hoists Monty (Ron Becks) and Billie (Sally Taylor) on him, despite them not having a clue about sharks.

That's about all the sense this film is going to make. Animated sparkles, rapid zooms and a surprising amount of car chases in a film about sharks. Honestly it feels less like a film and more of a strange comedy skit that got out of hand. Everyone overacts or just runs around. Most of the crew were Aussie soap stars, so it feels like their single direction was ACT DAMNIT! Everyone has either bedroom eyes, crazy eyes, or animated twinkles off their shades.
