Horror 2023 Countdown: Night Terrors (1993)

Night Terrors (1993), dir. Tobe Hooper, Global Pictures/Golan-Globus Productions

Lord, Tobe Hooper just couldn't catch a break, could he?

Back in the days of old, the Marquis de Sade (Robert Englund) is finally imprisoned. He's more annoyed but this does little to curb his appetites.

In the present, Genie (Zoe Trilling) arrives in Egypt. She's there to see her father, Dr. Matteson (William Finley). He's searching for a particular set of ruins. Genie wanders the streets for a bit. She's nearly assaulted when a woman rescues her and ah, she happens to be a big fan of de Sade.

Then there is Mr. Chevalier (Englund again), who is an even bigger fan of the marquis. He is very taken with her, VERY TAKEN he'll have you know.

Will Genie sees through the cult's lies?

Yeah, this could have stood a rewrite. Englund does a great job as the marquis but everyone else is either wasted or does so little with their characters they might as well not even be there. Everyone Genie meets seems to be in the cult of de Sade, so WHY are they so taken with her? She has no character or drive, and her old man gets bumped off so fast you wonder if Finley had an early morning flight.

Hooper does as good as he can but this isn't helping him in any way.
