Maniac Cop (1987), dir. William Lustig, Sharpiro-Glickenhaus Productions
William Lustig AND Larry Cohen together? With Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins?
A rash of murders plagues New York City. The catch is the killer is dressed as cop. Lt. McRae (Atkins) is investigating but he seems to be getting an awful lot of pushback from the top, almost like they don't want him to find the killer.
Ellen Forrest (Victoria Catlin), meanwhile, is equally concerned. Her husband Jack (Campbell) is a cop and he seems to be doing a lot of overtime. She follows him one night, but instead of catching him being a serial killer she finds him in the arms of Officer Mallory (Laurene Landon). Distraught, she runs away from the hotel, only into the arms of the Maniac Cop.
Jack is promptly arrested, but McRae talks to him. When McRae and Mallory encounter the Cop (Robert Z'Dar), they both believe him, but how can they prove it?
McRae starts looking into records officer Sally Nowland (Sheree North), since she was only person Mallory told about her shacking up with Forrest. Following her, McRae hears her talking to somebody she calls Matt.
Going through the files gets them info on Officer Matthew Cordell. A real super cop, at least until he was arrested for a variety of crimes, which would conflict with the whole good cop thing. Yup, Cordell would be the perfect suspect, pity he's dead. Killed in the showers in Sing Sing Prison.
Except not quite; Matt was messed up yeah but not quite as dead as everyone thought. He slipped out and he's working his way through the city. Can our heroes stop him in time?
Pretty darn good and with this cast? Absolutely perfect in every detail.
