Horror 2023 Countdown: The Face at the Window (1939)

The Face at the Window (1939), dir. George King, George King Productions

Moving into our special lookback, this year we focus on a particular favorite of mine, werewolves!

1880, Paris

A series of murders have occurred over the city. The victims, before they die, manage to eek out 'the face at the window!' before dying. The entire city is gripped in fear.

The latest murder happens at a bank. The place is cleaned out and the teller slain. M. de Brisson (Aubrey Mallalieu), bank president, is at his wit's end. The other teller, Lucien Cortier (John Warwick) is the one to find the body. He's also in love with Cecile (Marjorie Taylor), de Brisson's daughter.

He isn't the only one, however; Cecile is also the object of lust of Chevalier Lucio del Gardo (Tod Slaughter). The much older del Gardo offers to cover the bank's loss, provided he is allowed to wed Cecile. This ruffles Cortier something fierce, so he starts an investigation of his own of the older man.

Not awful, but a British film of the time wouldn't have any monsters until the 1950s. Yeah, they build up a werewolf being the killer but it turns out to be just one ugly dude (Harry Terry). A but disappointing, but this could be considered more noir than horror.
