Horror 2023 Countdown: Lifeboat (1944)

Lifeboat (1944), dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 20th Century Fox

Moving into the director section, we see Alfred Hitchcock and one of his underrated films.

A lifeboat is adrift in the Atlantic. In it are a mixed group, British and Americans, and from all walks. Their ship sank after exchanging fire with a U-boat. Sometime into their voyage, they spot a survivor. The catch is this is Willi (Walter Slezak). He speaks only German, but from what they can gather he was a simple crewman tossed overboard.

They decide to set sail to Bermuda, but tensions rise. Not only for food and water but it seems Willi is more than he appears...

To say anymore would utterly spoil. Hitchcock knocks it out of the park with the sheer amount of tension from the first scene to the last. Tallulah Bankhead steals the show as the smart mouthed photographer Connie. Hitchcock sets up a wonderful question about savagery and environment.
