Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992), dir. John Carpenter, Le Studio Canal+/Regency Enterprises/Alcor Films/Cornelius Productions
John Carpenter's big 90's debut and he brings us history's greatest monster.
Nick Halloway (Chevy Chase) is a stock analyst, at least on paper as the man seems to spend most of his work day avoiding work. He meets producer Alice (Darryl Hannah) and they hit it off, setting up a date soon.
At a shareholder meeting at the Magnascopic Labs building, Nick is bored to tears by the presentation. He slips off to a nearby office to catch a quick nap. At the same time, a techie spills his coffee and sets off a chain reaction. The end result isn't quite an explosion but huge chunks of the building are simply gone.
They're still there but they are now invisible, Nick included. CIA agent Jenkins (Sam Neill) arrives and sees some possibilities. An agent that no one can see? Pity some agents crack a joke about Nick being a lab specimen for the rest of his life. This prompts him to escape.
Can Nick avoid being captured by Jenkins? Will Nick get together with Alice?
Will the audience care?
I mean, the effects are pretty good (even for today) but Chase is utterly miscast, coming across more smarmy than slacker. Neill is perfect as the deranged spy though and easily steals every scene he's in.
