Horror 2021 Countdown: Halloween (2007)

Halloween (2007) dir. Rob Zombie, Dimension Films/Nightfall Productions/Spectacle Entertainment Group/Trancas International/the Weinstein Company

After the critical drubbing of the last film, why not a reboot?

Haddonfield, Illinois is a perfectly normal town. It's just that the people inside it are crazy. Michael Myers (Daeg Faerch) looks like a perfectly average kid, violent outbursts and animal mutilation aside. When he is denied a chance to go trick or treating, he opts for a trick. Namely murdering a bunch of people including his older sister and stepdad (William Forsythe).

This gets him committed to Smith's Grove Sanitarium and under the care of Dr. Loomis (Malcolm McDowell). The doc tries to reach Michael but the young man slowly retreats inside until fifteen years later he's legal age and largely mute. Also played by Tyler Mane.

On Halloween night, Michael decides that he is no longer satisfied with the accommodations and opts to leave, murdering most of his guards on the way out. Killing a trucker (Ken Foree) for his clothes, Michael stops by his old house for his proper mask and knife before getting down to business.

Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton), along with best pals Annie Brackett (Danielle Harris) and Lynda Van Der Klok (Kristina Klebe), are looking for a nice night of babysitting and making out with their boyfriends, respectively.

Lynda decides that of all the places in town to meet her boyfriend Bob (Nick Mendall), the old Myers house would be perfect. Michael disagrees. He's on the prowl now and heading for Laurie...but why?

Sheriff Brackett (Brad Douriff) explains as he drives Dr. Loomis around town. Laure Strode's real name is Angel Myers. Yeah, we're not only doing the original we're also throwing in part 2 as well.

Knifing Anne, Michael drags Laurie back to the old homestead. Can Dr. Loomis save her in time?

Rob Zombie is a fine director. The scenes are understandable, soundtrack good but Zombie the director should stay the hell away from Zombie the screenwriter.

Everyone is a jerk, save for the sheriff. Even Laurie (especially Laurie); watching I have to wonder if Zombie has ever talked to a human before. Everyone is as nasty as they can be to everyone and rock stupid on top. Kind of takes away the horror when you actively root for the masked psycho to hurry up and kill people. Mean-spirited and dumb. The old Michael Myers was eventually bogged with the curse of Thorne and mystic nonsense but here we spend far too much time with Michael as a kid. The hulking brute loses some menace when we see him pitching a screaming tantrum.

Casting is great, with nearly every character played by a character actor so kudos for that.
