Horror 2021 Countdown: Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (1985)

Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (1985) dir. Philippe Mora, Hemdale Film Corporation/Granite Productions

If you're going to go out, why end something with Christopher Lee and a screaming Reb Brown?

Ben White (Brown) is in town to bury his sister Karen. Her death is somewhat of a mystery. In that the only coworker of hers to show up at the funeral is Jenny (Annie McEnroe), who was never mentioned in the previous film.

Also at the burial is occult investigator Stefan Crosscoe (Lee). He mentions Karen's death to Ben and Jenny and implores them to speak with him, but at his house as a group of mourners stare intently at them. Ben and Jenny go to Stefan's house where he shows them the video tape of Karen's death. Ben dismisses the tape as fake (given the special effects shown, plus the wrong number painted behind her he's right to do so) but Stefan insists that not only is Karen a werewolf she's still alive. Silver bullets tend to be removed during an autopsy after all.

Ben refuses to believe him but accompanies him to the graveyard that night. Sure enough Karen is much livelier and hairier in the moonlight. Stefan and Ben manage to kill Karen a second time and drive off the werewolves that attacked, but Stefan makes it clear this is only the beginning.

If they want to stop the monsters, they have to head to the birthplaces of werewolves: Transylvania!

They arrive, but Stirba (Sybil Danning) the Werewolf Queen, is ready too. She's regained her youth and she has plans. Stefan gathers his forces as Stirba gathers hers and the final showdown begins.

Lord. Lee gives it his best but some things are beyond even his power. The film seems to confuse vampires and werewolves given the use of stakes and other bits of myth. The location is wonderful and used to the full potential, but the transformation scenes are almost laughable when compared to the first film. Worth a view for the cheese factor but not much else.
