Horror 2021 Countdown: Frankenstein's Daughter (1958)

Frankenstein's Daughter (1958) dir. Richard E. Cunha, Layton Film Productions Inc.

Astor Pictures was a company devoted to making stuff that American International would pass on and this was their Frankenstein flick.

Don (Harold Lloyd, Jr.) drops his gal Suzie (Sally Todd) off home after a date. Suzie's night ends on a bad note when a hideous creature, dressed in a nightie of all things, gives her a scare before she can duck inside her house.

Suzie's friends are less than helpful, with Johnny (John Ashley) making clear he thinks Suzie just wants attention. Johnny's girlfriend Trudy (Sandra Knight), disagrees as the creature Suzie describes the same thing she thought she dreamed up a few nights ago.

Yeah, seems Trudy's uncle, Carter Morton (Felix Maurice Locher) is working on chemicals to preserve tissue. His assistant Dr. Frank (Donald Murphey) does most of the real work. He also has a secret sub-lab in Dr. Morton's house, plus an assistant (Wolfe Barzell) of his own.

You can guess where this is going, but you'd be wrong.

Yes, Dr. Frank is really a Frankenstein but the twist about the monster? It's Trudy.

Yeah, seems Dr. Frank's been slipping some formula into Trudy's food and drink at night, causing her nocturnal activities. Frank is building a monster of his own (Harry Wilson), however, and Trudy's nightly freak outs are causing him some stress. He's got the body down perfectly but he's lacking a head.

Suzie provides, however. She's been hanging around the house and she captured Frank's eye, heart, and a few other parts too. When she turns him down however, Frank figures she just volunteered for science and runs her other. Her head is spared though and soon Frank's Monster is alive!

And also just as uncontrollable as his ancestors.

Interesting but cheap. Honestly if they had a rewrite or two this might have been better. So close yet so far.
