Horror 2019 Countdown: Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) dir. Wes Craven, New Line Cinema

Given we saw Freddy Kruger (Robert Englund) being blown up by his daughter, how exactly would New Line bring him back? And could he be scary again? After seeing him off a stoner with the Power Glove, audiences might not be so accepting...

Heather Langenkamp (herself) has more or less retired after playing the role of Final Girl Nancy. She's settled down with special effects guru Chase (David Newsom) and her son Dylan (Miko Hughes). She's done with acting and with horror, but one fan doesn't think so.

She's been getting phone calls in Freddy's voice and threatening letters. Having a nightmare where Freddy's glove becomes alive and murders Chase doesn't exactly make her days easier. During a rare interview she's agitated as the host just wants to talk about Freddy. When the Man from Your Dreams (Englund) appears, Heather manages to keep her composure.

After the show, she gets call from New Line producer Sarah Risher (herself) who wants to set up a met between her and Wes Craven (himself). Yes, it seems Wes has a new Nightmare script ready to go and he wants no less than the original gal herself to star (Never mind her dying in part 3, but eh, Hollywood).

Heck, Wes has even contracted Chase's special effects studio to handle the gore and guts. When Heather gets home, Dylan seems to be having some kind of seizure and muttering something about Freddy. Calling Chase, he does his family duty and returns home...but he's been working so late and he's awfully tired...

When Heather goes to the morgue, sure enough she finds four deep claw marks across her husband's chest (the only wounds in fact). When she confronts Wes later, the director admits to writing his death into the script.

Turns out everyone involved in the film has been having some vivid nightmares. Is Freddy taking over the script or the script taking over them?

Brilliant; instead of simply having Freddy come back without explanation they go meta with what might be the most fourth wall breaking script I've seen in a while. Freddy in this film hasn't been this menacing since the first one, and Englund pulls out all the stops.
