Horror 2019 Countdown: Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974)

Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974) dir. Terrence Fisher, Hammer Film Productions

So we come to the end of Hammer's Frankenstein series, and who better to handle it than the man who directed the first one, Terrence Fisher?

Dr. Carl Victor (Peter Cushing) is currently an inmate in an insane asylum. He's an inmate, but thanks to some blackmail he's also working as the asylum's official doctor. He's also really Baron Frankenstein.

Yes, being dragged into a burning house by a patchwork monster he forged was merely an inconvenience although his hands are now too damaged to do the delicate work. Thankfully the asylum gets a new inmate: Dr. Simon Helder (Shane Briant), who was caught bodysnatching. Frankenstein is impressed with the young doctor's skill and soon makes him his assistant.

Of course he wouldn't be Frankenstein if he wasn't trying to recreate life. When misshapen brute Schneider (David Prowse) kills himself, Frankenstein considers it a boon and the perfect canvas. Granting him new hands and a brain, the now even uglier Monster goes on a rampage.

Can Frankenstein and Helder stop the Monster in time?

As far as final notes to go out on, this one could have been much worse. It's all familiar ground (Frankenstein uses an alias, works with a younger partner, monster goes nuts, etc.) but the cast and Fisher make it work.
