Horror 2019 Countdown: Abbot and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (1949)

Abbot and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (1949), dir. Charles Barton, Universal-International Pictures

And we're ending our look back at the Universal series with this entry. By now Universal had regulated the main monsters strictly to the comedy bin. Bud and Lou had a hit when they met Frankenstein, so a horror sequel was quickly turned out.

Amos Strickland (Nicholas Joy) is many things; respected, feared, and a top class attorney. He's also stone dead, a fact that bellhop Freddie (Costello) discovers when he enters the man's room. House detective Casey Edwards (Abbot) tries to prove the bumbling bellhop innocent, but Inspector Wellman (James Flavin) and Sgt. Stone (Mikal Conrad) are convinced they have their man.

Of course there's more to the plot than that. It seems Strickland's personal secretary Milford (Morgan Farley) and seven of the late shyster's clients are at the resort too and each one of them had motive to do the man in. When Milford and client Relia (Vincent Renno) are found dead in Freddie's closet, the surviving members of the group figure it would be best for everyone if Freddie took the fall.

The police, however, figure maybe Freddie is innocent, as nobody that dumb can be a triple murderer. Plots are hatched by both sides to try and figure out who did it and to kill Freddie respectively.

Oy. Boris Karloff is in the title but honestly he's little more than a cameo. My tolerance for Costello's mugging and yelling has grown thin over the years, so a modern audience may wish to skip this one.
