Horror 2019 Countdown: The Man Who Could Cheat Death (1959)

The Man Who Could Cheat Death (1959) dir. Terrence Fisher, Hammer Film Productions

Moving into the science fiction portion of Hammer, we see an early work with Fisher again taking the helm alongside Christopher Lee.

1890 Paris, and a madman stalks the streets leaving mutilated bodies in his wake. Dr. Georges Bonnet (Anton Differing) is concerned, but his main area of focus besides medicine is sculpting. He's also suffering from a slight aliment which is turning his flesh green and he's melting skin with his hands.

You see, Dr. Bonnet is actually 104 years old. Some time ago he discovered if you take some glands from a human, you can extend your life beyond your normal years. Pity it doesn't last forever. Every ten years Bonnet has to have an upgrade. The past few operations have been handled by Professor Ludwig Weiss (Arnold Marle) but Weiss bows out this time.

With growing desperation, Bonnet resorts to blackmailing Dr. Gerard (Lee) with the life of Janine (Hazel Court), a woman both men have been seeing. Will Bonnet get his gland in time?

Not bad, but Peter Cushing would have been a better fit as the immoral immortal. Differing tries but he's far too stiff and the romance angle just falls flat.
