Horror 2022 Countdown: The Snorkel (1958)

The Snorkel (1958), dir. Guy Green, Hammer Films

Kicking off the Hammer section, this year we'll be looking at some of their lesser known works.

Paul Decker (Peter van Eyck) is about to murder his wife. It's a doozy of a method too. While he is officially in seclusion to work on his next novel, Paul slips into the large villa where his wife is staying. After drugging her, he seals up the windows and doors, making sure the upstairs is also flooded with gas, while he chills in his secret hidey-hole

The Inspector (Geogoire Aslan) writes the whole thing off as a suicide, but his stepdaughter Candy (Mandy Miller) isn't convinced. The mysterious death of her father some years ago made her distrusting of Paul, and now with her mother dead? Candy has her work cut out for her. Can she prove her stepfather is a killer? Will Paul put Candy away in a madhouse or will he take a more lethal approach?

Pretty good; Paul is presented as a perfectly reasonable fellow, murder notwithstanding. You can see how he charms people. Candy is a decent hero too, with her act bringing to a mind a much more mature Nancy Drew.
