Horror 2022 Countdown: The Cat Creeps (1946)

The Cat Creeps (1946), dir. Erle C. Kento, Universal Pictures Company

Now we have the film that shared a bill with She-Wolf of London and the last official horror film of the 1940's.

Some years ago, infamous bootlegger Eric Goran died. Officially the cause was listed as suicide, but now things are casting doubt on that verdict.

That's what brings fast talking reporter Terry Nichols (Fred Brady) to Goran's remote island residence. Among the cast of characters that seem to be drawn to the place, Cora Williams (Vera Lewis) stands out. One, she actually lives on the island, and two, she claims to be living with the vast fortune Goran left her before his death.

She turns up dead not soon after; then Kyra Goran (Iris Lancaster) arrives. She's the late Goron's daughter and only heir, thus any fortune rightly belongs to her. She also has a black cat with her, which she claims is possessed by Cora's vengeful spirit.

I'd ask how she knew Cora was dead, but that's just me.

The body count starts to rise. Can the culprit be found before the entire island is wiped out?

Eh, pretty weak entry and a disappointing note to end things on. Very much an attempt to do an Agatha Christie type whodunit but the characters are weak or too broad to take seriously
