Horror 2022 Countdown: Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), dir. Jeff Burr, Nicolas Entertainment

After Part 2, Cannon Films ended up going under and its various properties ended up to the highest bidder. Once things got straightened out, why not take another trip to Texas?

According to this film, and retconning the previous, Sally and her friends encountered a chainsaw wielding cannibal clan in the wilds of the Lone Star State. Sally alone escaped and died in a private care home in 1977, with a fellow named W.E. Sawyer getting the blame for the crime and being executed via gas chamber in 1981.

Clearly the matter is solved, right?

Couple Ryan (William Butler) and Michelle (Kate Hodge) are going across country. Their trip hits a snag though; seems a massive traffic jam is ahead on account of a mass grave being found. Going off the beaten path leads them to the Last Chance Gas station. There they met the attendant, Alfredo (Tom Everett) and friendly hitchhiker Tex (Viggo Mortensen). Alfredo is a creep while Tex is nothing but helpful, so helpful especially when he catches Alfredo peeping on Michelle when she uses the restroom. This ends badly for Tex, with Alfredo seemingly blowing him away with a shotgun.

The couple flee but only for a few hours. Just after sunset they run afoul of a massive truck that knocks them off the road. They manage to escape but wreck their car when they crash into Benny (Ken Foree)'s Jeep. Benny is a gun nut, and good for him, as Leatherface (R.A. Mihailoff) makes the scene. Things get worse from there.

Decent, but you can tell where the edits where made, and no less than three character we clearly see die show up at the end without any comment.

It does walk the line between the greasy horror of the first and the camp of the second. Decent in its own way, even if it was shot in California rather than Texas.
