Horror 2022 Countdown: I'm Dangerous Tonight (1990)

I'm Dangerous Tonight (1990), dir. Tobe Hooper, BBK Productions/Coastline Partners/MCA Television Entertainment

Tobe Hooper, man. The 80's saw him working on three big budget flicks for a real studio, but when all three failed to set the box office ablaze, Hooper was cast down. When Spontaneous Combustion went direct to video after a paltry showing in theaters, Hooper fell even more into the realm of made for TV movies. Well, he did 'Salem's Lot and that was great, right?

A professor breaks into an Aztec tomb and finds a red cloak. It's evil, evil I tells you, as evidenced by his murdering a security guard. When both the professor and his wife bite it (not in that order), the cloak ends up in a trunk.

Said trunk is latter bought by college student Amy (Madchen Amick), as she is hunting for props for her drama class production of Romero & Julliet. Her boyfriend Eddie (Corey Parker), is playing Mercutio, dons the cloak for his roll and nearly skewers his costar during rehearsal.

Amy takes the cloak home, where she lives with her aunt, cousin Gloria (Daisy Hall), and mute grandmother (Natalie Schafer). Ignoring any superstitions, she remakes the cloak into a slinky red dress. Once donning it, she puts the move on her cousin's boyfriend Mason (Jason Brooks). Once it is removed, she's back to normal.

Her cousin, however, takes matters in her own hands. Slipping it on, she goes full psycho and murders her unfaithful beau before dying in a fiery wreck. Police Lt. Ackerman (R. Lee Ermey) and Professor Buchanan (Anthony Perkins) both start hunting the dress down although for different reasons.

Pity that it ends up in the hands of junkie coroner assistant Wanda (Dee Wallace), somehow. Yeah, they don't show how she got ahold of the dress or why she was needed for the plot.

Not horrible, but yeah, USA Network in 1990 wasn't quite CBS in 1979. Funny, a dress that can survive a truck exploding but is vulnerable to scissors?
