TFtember: Transformers#12

"Prime Time!" the Transformers#12 (January 1986) with credits to Bob Budiansky (script), Herb Trimpe (pencils), Al Gordon (inks), Nel Yomtov (colors), Janice Chiang (letters), and Mike Carlin (editor)

So, with Jetfire now loyal to the Autobots and Buster having a good sense of his powers, what's to stop them from rescuing Optimus Prime?

Turns out a lot. While on route to Blackrock's factory it seems they forgot to inform ol' Uncle Sam. Spotting a jet streaking across the sky towards the factory, the full might of the United States Army opens fire on it. Jetfire manages to avoid the flak but Buster is sadly squishy.

Being thrown about the cockpit like a ball bearing in a washing machine ends with Buster being knocked cold and Jetfire reverted to his factory settings. He still remembers to get to the factory and Shockwave promptly puts Buster to work.

The Autobots aren't idle though. Through the bug they hear that Shockwave intends to dump Prime's head in a nearby swamp. Rushing there with a newly rebuilt body for Prime, they attach the head...and are immediately gunned down.

Yup, Shockwave knew about the bug and lured the Autobots to an isolated area and gave then a fake head. With Soundwave and his mini-cassettes surrounding them, things are looking grim.

At least until Buster comes to and remembers how his powers work. With Jetfire in his power, he knocks out Shockwave and rescues Prime's head. Rushing to the swamp, Prime takes over his body and quickly drives the Decepticons off.

Shockwave isn't out of the game yet though. Coming to, he finds the factory is in revolt. Figuring if you want something done right, you'd better do it yourself, he heads off to the swamp and kill everything he can find.

Pity he finds a full company of Autobots. Optimus in particular is eager to work his new body's kinks out and easily sinks the Decepticon leader in the swamp. Before he can finish him off for good, he opts to check on Buster. He finds the human youth alive and safe. He takes his power back, wondering how many people were endangered by the Autobots war.

Pretty good and almost reads as a finale. The series would go on for a while though, and we'll get to more issues later.
