Horror Countdown 2016: The Undead (1957)

The Undead (1957) dir. Roger Corman, American International Pictures/Balboa Productions

Moving into the realm of Roger Cormen, the Undead was the second film he made in 1957 and it only took six days. Maybe he should have taken a bit more time with this one.

Quintus Ratcliff (Val Dufor) is a man on a mission. Barging into the office of his old professor, he claims his research into psychic phenomena has far surpassed whatever level the old man was on. To prove this he introduces a woman of the evening Diana Love (Pamela Duncan), whom he has never met before. Placing her under hypnosis, he somehow changes her into Helene, an accused witch from the Middle Ages

Therein lies the problem, as the two men see it. If Helene is here in the proper 1957, then she won't die, thus possibly screwing up the entire timeline and possibly ending life as we know it. Quintus hypnotizes himself and goes back to the Middle Ages to try and get her burned as witch.

Satan (Richard Devon) is afoot in this dark time, and if he can't get one soul he'd be more than happy with another...

Bit of a rough one, although Dick Miller a leaper is a hoot and the gravedigger Smolkin (Mel Welles) shines every time he's on camera. I'd still suggest the version with Mike & the Bots though.
