Horror Countdown 2016: The Mummy's Ghost (1944)

The Mummy's Ghost (1944), dir. Reginald Le Borg, Universal Pictures

While Universal monsters were moving into different directions, there were still some bumps in the road. The Mummy series was a large bump.

It has now been some years since the Mummy's Tomb, (implying that either Tomb took place back in the thirties or this takes place in the seventies) and a new priest approaches the tomb of Anankha. The old priest Andoheb (George Zucco); despite dying of old age and bullets before that, welcomes the new priest Yousef Bay (John Carradine) to the priesthood and tasks him with going to Mapleton and finally getting the remains of Anankha back.

Of course, he'll need some help, namely the mummy Kharis (Lon Chaney, Jr.). Thanks to the efforts of overly curious Professor Norman (Frank Reicher), Kharis lives again and Youself has himself a weapon.

While Kharis is busy strangling Norman, one of the professor's students-Amina (Ramsay Ames), is in a trance, passing out in the professor's front yard as Kharis limps away from the crime scene. Sheriff Elwood (Harry Shannon) can't seem to think if she's a witness or the killer. He orders her and her boyfriend Tom (Robert Lowery) not to leave town.

Yousef has bigger problems though. He and Kharis finally find the body of Anankha, but as he says his prayers over the remains the body evaporates. Clearly this means the princess's soul has been reborn into a living form. Who could it be? Maybe a certain Egyptian college student, one who's been ordered not to leave town?

It's Amina. Yousef finds himself tempted like his predecessor, because while his mission is holy and what he's been training for his entire life, Amina is really hot. Even Kharis can't believe he has to go through this plot again. Can Tom save his girl in time?

The wheel were pretty darn wobbly before, but by now they have fallen off. Carradine manages to maintain his dignity, as usual, but only barely.
