Horror Countdown 2016: The Black Cat (1941)

The Black Cat (1941) dir. Albert S. Rogell, Universal Pictures

Moving into the 1940's, the horror genre was changing. Murder mysteries were still in vogue, but this has even less to do with Poe's short story than the 1930's version.

Henrietta Winslow (Cecilia Loftus) is very rich, very eccentric, and soon to be dead. Not murder, mind you, but she is ridiculously old and is planning accordingly. Summoning her relatives to her vast country estate, she makes it clear what they're going to get when she kicks off.

Everything seems to be order, but there are a few issues. One, the old woman has let her entire property be overrun with cats. Two, the old dear dies quite suddenly. The last one wouldn't be a problem, except she added a few peculiars to her will. Some one then starts stalking the estate and guests. Is it the creepy groundskeeper Eduardo (Bela Lugosi)? The comedy relief? Or someone else entirely?

Not terrible, but Hugh Herbt's antique dealer can wear on one's nerves very quickly.
