Horror Host 2013 Retrospective: The Grim Reaper

The Grim Reaper

Real name: Bob Crowley

Years active: 1980-1982, San Antonio, Texas

The 1980’s was an odd decade. With the advent of video recorder and cable, horror hosts increased, yet television also changed. Infomercials proved to be a cheaper alternative to local television. Nightmare Theater ran on KENS channel 5 in San Antonio for only a brief time, but the Grim Reaper did go against the mold.
Shooting live for nearly a dozen weeks, Crowley played the titular reaper as a sort of sad sack, usually depressed about his job and prone to pranks carried out by the various guests. The show did end on a high note, with a full 3-D airing of the Revenge of the Creature.

In the end the show ended, like most tend to do. The 1980’s would only have a few hosts operating in Texas, but the later decades would have more.
