Horror 2025 Countdown: Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence (1992)

Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence (1992), dir. Alan Smithee, First Look Studios/NEO Motion Pictures

'Directed by Alan Smithee' is always a sign. Rarely a good sign, I mind you. William Lustig wanted his name off. Did he have a good reason?

If you recall Maniac Cop 2, the cop that couldn't be stopped Matt Cordell (Robert Z'Dar) was stopped pretty properly, i.e. falling through a bus while on fire. The bus then exploded, and he was buried with full honors.

Houngan Malfaiteur (Julius Harris) doesn't see his being dead as an excuse to slack off so one ritual later the wrong arm of the law is back!

While all of this is happening, there's a robbery going down. A hopped-up hoodlum (Jackie Earle Haley) is trying to rob a convenience store. Thankfully Officer Katie Sullivan (Gretchen Becker) is on the scene. Sure, she's a little rough around the edges, but she gets results!

In this case the result is figuring out the store clerk is working alongside the robber. One crossfire later and everyone is either dead or dying. Some reporters happen by but they figure it would be easier to sell the story as a rogue cop gunning down innocent bystanders. Sullivan's reputation doesn't exactly clearly her name on this one.

Enter Lt. Sean McKinney (Robert Davi). He's in charge of the investigation and he's not happy about anything. Cordell even less so. The Maniac Cop opts to show his support to a fellow officer by murdering any and everyone who endangers her life or reputation.

Can McKinney stop Cordell again?

Yeah, starting to see why Lustig wanted his name off of this one. Cordell is in great shape despite suffering third degree body burns and WHY exactly does a voodoo priest need a zombie cop?
