Halloween Ends (2022), dir. David Gordon Green, Miramax/Blumhouse Productions/Trancas International Films/Rough House Pictures
We're moving into the slasher section and what better way to begin with an ending?
One year after Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) no sold his beating and murdered the mob that tried to kill him, Haddonfield is still on edge. Nerdy Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) isn't that concerned. Nope, he's going to college and everything is coming up Corey!
He's so happy he even offers to babysit for the Allens. Mister and Mrs. Allen (Jack William Marhsall and Candice Rose) are bit a hesitant but Corey seems harmless enough for precious little Jeremy (Jaxon Goldenberg). Pity Jeremy is a right little jackass who decides the best thing to do is prank Corey via locking him in a closet and pretend Michael Myers is breaking in.
Corey, keyed up on adrenaline, kicks the door open. Jeremy, not having the sense to stand clear and also doing the prank at the top floor of the house, is launched to the ground floor just as his parents arrive.
One trial later, Corey's not in prison but he might as well be; the entire town hates him and DJ Willy the Kid (Keraun Harris) won't let anyone forget plus even the marching band bullies him.
So where's Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis)? She's still in town. Daughter's dead but her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) is living with her, but the young lady is harboring thoughts of leaving. Laurie is also a town pariah as somehow the folks in Haddonfield blame HER for Myers' rampage.
She bumps into Corey outside a minimart and the pair hit it off. When Corey hurts his hand, Laurie takes him to the local clinic, where what a coincidence, Allyson works! She stiches him up and even invites him to a party.
Corey, desperate for positive interaction at this point, accepts but things go downhill in record time when the other attendees figure out who her date is. Corey manages to escape but the marching band hunts him and chucks him off a bridge. Guess who drags Corey to safety?
You guess it, Michael Myers! Who's been chilling in a massive cave this whole time. He goes to kill Corey when the lad awakens, but something makes him stray his hand. Corey escapes but he leaves with a novel idea. The next time someone pisses him off, why not try murder?
At this point, I think the title is mostly the audience screaming "END!" Disjointed and far too many writers equals a utter mess. Michael goes back to be a realistic depiction of an old man who's been beaten to hell and back. The people in Haddonfield are uniformly awful so you don't feel much when Corey dons the Shatner mask.
