TFtember: Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Transformers: The Movie (1986) dir. Nelson Shin, Sunbow Productions/Marvel Productions/Toei Animation

So, while the series went into reruns, August saw the debut of the Movie. My Little Pony: The Movie was a bust, would this be different?

Unicron (Orson Welles) is on the move and eating planets. While this is going on, the Great Autobot-Decepticon War is almost over, with only a massive push from either side needed.

Megatron (Frank Welker) opts to make that push himself. Hijacking an Autobot shuttle and killing the crew, they sneak past the Autobot defenses but Hot Rod (Judd Nelson) notices them and warns the 'bots. A pitched battle breaks out, with mass causalities on both sides, including Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen).

While the Autobots mourn and Ultra Magnus (Robert Stack) takes the Matrix of Leadership, the Decepticons bury their dead in a respectful manner, i.e. chucking them out of the nearest airlock. Megatron, barely alive, is found by Unicron and reborn into Galvatron (Leonard Nimoy). His first offical act? Kill Starscream (Chris Latta).

So he's already a bit more on the ball than Megatron.

The Autobots have some misadventures but everything is gearing up towards a fight to the finish. Can our heroes stop the planet killer?

Yeah, I remember this being panned when it came out. Hey kids, remember all those great characters you followed for two seasons? Well they're dead! I'm told more than a few kids left the theater in tears after watching Prime die, as in left right after that scene.

Basically the bar was knocked into the dirt. Could the third season win back the crowd?
