Horror Countdown 2018: Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955)

Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955) dir. Charles Lamont, Universal-International Pictures.

And here we end our look back at the Universal films. This is also the last picture Abbot and Costello did for Universal. Since our boys already meet Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf Man, Boris Karloff, the Invisible Man; and the Gill-Man too, but on a TV show, the only monster left was the Mummy.

Bud (Abbott) and Lou (Costello) are two Americans down on their luck. Stuck in Egypt, they're pondering their next move when they overhear Dr. Zoomer (Kurt Klatch) talking about the tomb of Princess Ara. If someone could find the mummy Klaris (Eddie Parker), legend says the mummy was buried with a medallion that could show the location of Ara's treasure. Pity they aren't the only ones listening in, as Semu (Richard Deacon), leader of the Followers of Klaris is quite keen on Ara's treasure being undiscovered, but Madame Rontru (Marie Windsor) has ideas of her own regarding the treasure.

Bud and Lou head over the doctor's house to discuss employment, but Semu's men have already paid a visit. Leaving the doctor dead and the medallion behind, Bud and Lou run into Rontru who offers to take such a worthless trinket off their hands. Due to some slapstick, Lou ends up swallowing the medallion. Semu arrives, claiming he can decipher the writing.

Which Klaris being brought back to life, can Bud and Lou wring profit and some laughs before they join the dead?

Ok, but law of diminishing returns is in full force. This would be the last Mummy film by Universal for the next 44 years. We'll head across the pond for a look at Hammer Films.
