Vampire Circus (1972), dir. Robert Young, Hammer Films Productions
A few folks have called this Hammer's finest vampire film.
The quaint village of Stetl is having some trouble, namely a vampire. They suspect Count Mitterhaus (Robert Tayman) is the vampire.
He is, by the way. A posse of concerned citizens attack the castle. They manage to stake the count, but with his undying breathe he curses the place and swears to come back with the aid of their children's blood.
There might be something to that, as for the next fifteen years the whole area is ravaged by plague. Things have gotten so bad all the roads are blocked and manned by armed guards. No one gets in, no gets out.
So it comes to be quite the shock when a traveling show appears. The Circus of Night promises all manners of delights.
They are also vampires, in case the title was confusing. With vampires in their midst, can the village defend itself?
Darn good. The vampires in this act more like a cross between vampires and werewolves but that just serves to increase the tension.
