Halloween Kills (2021), dir. David Gordon Green, Miramax/Blumhouse Productions/Trancas International Films/Rough House Pictures
It is often mentioned that some sequels can surpass the original. It's rare to see a sequel that seems determined to ruin the previous.
We open with a flashback to 1978. Officer Hawkins (Thomas Mann) prevents Dr. Loomis from killing the injured Michael Myers (Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney).
Present day, Hawkins (Will Patton) is bleeding out after being stabbed by Michael's current doctor. He's found by Cameron (Dylan Arnold), the ex of Laurie (Jamie Lee Curtis)'s granddaughter.
Speaking of Michael, remember the last flick? The burning house and zero way he could escape? He escaped, killed a bunch of responding firefighters, and is now on the loose again.
Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall), meanwhile, recalls his 1978 meeting with the Boogeyman. Swearing that evil will die tonight, Tommy gets a mob up and running.
Can Laurie calm the mob? Will Michael ever be stopped or even mildly inconvenienced?
I swear, this has to be the single dumbest ending I've seen since the last Texas Chainsaw Massacre flick.
The mob corners Michael and in short order he is beaten and stabbed. Does it end with the mob horrified at the depths to which they sunk?
Nope, Michael no sells a knife through the spine and kills the entire mob. Also he somehow gets stronger the more people he kills? How the hell does that work? The 2018 film showed us no, Michael was just a man. A lucky man but flesh and blood all the same. Now? Unstoppable killing machine.
Just dumb.
