The Nutty Professor (1963), dir. Jerry Lewis, Jerry Lewis Films
Kicking off another year and we stat as usual with a pinch of mad science, this time with history's greatest monster.
Professor Julius Kelp (Jerry Lewis) is, well, Jerry Lewis. He's awkward, buck toothed and seems incapable of moving or speaking without falling or having his words end in a jumble. Students beat him, his fellows mock him, and all of his experiments end in explosions.
Everything changes one night after he creates a formula that turns him into Buddy Love (Lewis). Buddy is suave, charming, and handsome. Sure he's a total sociopath but them's the breaks sweetheart.
One student in particular is enthralled. Stella Purdy (Stella Stevens) is Kelp's top student. She's also disgusted by Love yet intrigued.
With the annual dance coming up, will Love overtake the school or will they see the real Kelp?
How much you like this depends on your tolerance for Lewis's antics. If you think he's funny, then Kelp and Love are brilliant characters. If you think Lewis is overrated and his schtick is creating far more annoyance than amusement, then this film is a slog.
