Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, or why I don't write for movies

The first Mortal Kombat movie may not have set many records, but it was a movie based on a video game that actually did fairly decent.

So when they did a sequel naturally they tossed out everything that made the first film work. How would I have handled it?

Our heroes, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Sonya Blade, and Raiden, have returned to the temple in the Earth realm. Shao Khan appears. True the Earth did win in Mortal Kombat and saved itself, but Khan isn't the most graceful loser.

So, he declares ANOTHER tournament, this time held in Outworld...and if Earth declines he'll destroy everything! Just to make his point, he kidnaps Sonya (and brings Kano back to life before kidnapping him too). Kitana, or someone just like her, shows up and beats up Liu Kang (she also helps kidnap Sonya).

Raiden's powers are limited in Outworld, but he'll go with the heroes. Johnny's angry, more so at Kitana while Liu Kang is heartbroken.

In Outworld, Khan brings Shang Tsung back to life but this time as an old man. Tsung isn't exactly pleased with this. He brings Scorpion back to serve him, as a new Sub-Zero shows up. Sub-Zero claims to be loyal to the clan and only wishes to serve his master like his brother did, but neither man nor ghost trust him.

Back on Earth and after some tense training, Liu Kang and Johnny find Raiden and prepare to go to Outworld. Jax shows up, demanding to know where Sonya is. They bring him along.

In Outworld, Jax is thrust into the crazy when Reptile attacks. He manages to kill lizard ninja. The three find none other than Kung Lao. Yes, the original champion of Mortal Kombat. When Shang Tung was killed, all the souls he captured fled but Lao's (being the oldest) and the one most used to the strange energy of Outworld, found himself restored to flesh. He agrees to help.

Shao Khan is watching and gloating. Kitana arrives, but it's actually Mileena her twin sister. She wants to kill Kitana now, a request grants. There's a complication, as Jade (a handmaiden), frees Kitana and implores her to escape. Mileena discovers this and fights Jade, killing her before heading out to find her sister and finish the job.

Sub-Zero and Scorpion attack our heroes, with Scorpion focusing on Johnny and Sub-Zero on Liu Kang. There's a switch mid-fight and Sub-Zero destroys Scorpion. He explains he wants revenge on Shang Tsung for his brother's death and leaves our heroes.

Shao Khan swears vengeance for this, but Tsung has escaped, using the souls of the slain characters so far to restore his youth.

Baraka, one of Khan's loyal servants, leads an attack on the heroes. Liu Kang fights and defeats Baraka as Kitana and Mileena arrive at the same time. The sisters fight (and Mileena's face is revealed) before Kitana stabs her to death with her fan.

Her innocence explained, Kitana joins our heroes and they head towards Khan's palace. They are separated. Kung Lao faces down the ninja Smoke and defeats him. Another ninja, Noob Saibot arrives and almost kills him when Sub-Zero arrives and freezes the ninja to death.

Johnny has to face General Kintaro, Goro's cousin who wants revenge. He manages to win and knock the four armed monster into an acid pool.

Shao Khan welcomes the heroes to his arena and from there it's a five on one throw down. Everyone gets a fair showing, but Liu Kang manages to deliver the final blow and knock Khan down into the pit.

The heroes celebrate and Raiden welcomes them back to Earth, but unseen by everyone, Shang Tsung drags the body of Khan away...
