Beyond Re-Animator (2003)

Beyond Re-Animator (2003) dir. Brian Yuzna, Castelao Productions/Via Digital/Fantastic Factory/Filmax

When we last left Dr. Herbert West, he was being buried under his secret lab with hordes of zombies running amuck. If he could survive a pile of sentient intestines, would zombies be enough to take him out?

As it turns out, no. One of the zombies, however, slips away and runs amuck in a neighborhood, killing at least one blonde teenager. Her brother is the only witness as West (Jeffery Combs) is blamed and hauled off by the cops.

Thirteen years later, West is trying to perfect his formula, which is somewhat difficult as he's been rotting in prison since that night. Dr. Howard Phillips (Jason Barry) is the new medical officer, but his reason for wanting to work in such a hell hole doesn't have to do with helping the incarcerated with their ills, but a personal matter. You see, that was his sister that died that night...

Oh, he has no desire for vengeance though. No, rather he wants to understand how West brought the dead back to life. With Phillips' word, West gets himself hired as a medical orderly and access to both bodies and chemicals. Which is fine for West, as he's made a few breakthroughs since last time, mainly a form of bio-electricity that he can extract from a brain. All they really need now is a test subject.

In walks Laura Olney (Elsa Pataky), plucky gal reporter. She wants to do a story about the prison, and Phillips is the best ticket inside. Once she gets inside however she runs afoul of Warden Brando (Simon Andreu), who handles her rejection of his advances by killing her. Tragic, but as West points out she isn't getting any fresher...

From things go about normally, i.e. zombies and buckets of blood. With the reagent being traded freely around the yard, tracking who's alive and who isn't a bit murkier than normal.

Decent, and of course Combs steals the show. They did the best they could with the reduced budget, but Combs honestly deserves a bigger showcase. Overall good, but a let down from the last two.
