And we're nearing the end in this year's Summer of Love(craft). We've seen shlock, suspense, and Stuart Gordon. Can the creative mind behind WNUF's Halloween Special measure up?
Carter Wilcox (David Phillip Carollo) is a lowly artist struggling to make it big, or at least to make it period. He finds a card advertising a special kind of service and calls the number. Who he gets is Riley Whately (Melissa O'Brien), and funny enough they hit it off. At first Carter just wants her to model for him, but soon it grows into an attraction and before you know it these kooky kids are in love.
There is a small matter of all the mass murders going on. A cult called the Church of Starry Wisdom is on the hunt for a women of the evening, who they will know by the mark of their great old god Cthulu imprinted on her right buttock.
Riley, it should be noted, sports a most unusual birthmark on her backside. Professor Edna Curwen (Helenmary Bell) tracks Carter down and offers him a job he can't refuse. The professor stole from the cult their copy of the Necronomicon and she needs Carter to produce a copy and quick. The cult has many hands and already they may be closing in. Is Riley doomed to become the love slave of a god?
Bless their hearts but they are trying. The idea is sound, and all the actors are certainly doing their best, but the film's low budget is painfully obvious. That isn't saying it isn't enjoyable, and hell, a fresh take is what Lovecraft's work needs at the moment. Worth a look if nothing else.
