Beware the Batman: Darkness

"Darkness" Beware the Batman, Cartoon Network, 10 August 2014

Back again and here's another Batman

Brief recap from previous episodes, namely that Batman went toe to toe with Ra's al Ghul and lost utterly.

Ra's has blacked out half the city. From one of those super large TV screens he delivers the reason why Gotham City sucks and why he's going to purge it from the face of the earth. Of course, in this is supposed to be the blacked out section of the city, how are they able to broadcast without power? And how can those people hear him? Those giant TV screen in large cities aren't equipped for sound. Also, some people are watching television in darkened rooms. Are their TV's on separate power grids from everything else?

His message is your fairly standard 'submit to me or die'. Which begs the question, what is Ra's next move? He's blacked out a city, but he didn't secure the bridges or any other means of exit. Katana and Alfred drive back to Wayne Manor without incident, so cars don't seem affected. What's to stop people from just leaving?

Brief showdowns between Alfred and Katana plus Batman and Silver Monkey, but right now we see the Bat Signal flashing across the sky. I guess it's on another separate power grid too? Gordon and Katana chat. It seems the only way to stop the Ion Cortex is to hack into it. If only they knew a hacker...as Barbara Gordon listens at the door (that was an attempt to be subtle)

So was Alfred (busy rooftop). Recapping their plans mostly.

Silver Monkey and Batman chat in their cell. When Batman was first brought in, we didn't see Monkey. Where was he hiding? Basically escape is in impossible, unless Monkey helps Batman. Doesn't seem that difficult of a choice yet somehow they'll make it one.

Back at GPD (which is still pretty lit), Gordon is annoyed that none of the computer crime division is there. "Have you seen it out there"? nameless cop asks. Yeah, pretty hairy what with the utter quiet and 10 people in town.

Huh. nameless cop is named Rodriguez. He was also ordered to pick up some of the computer crime guys. Why is he still in the station?

Barbara does the sensible thing and hijacks the mobile crime lab. Gordon still catches her, but he at least decides to go with her.

Meanwhile, Silver Monkey and Bats are out. Monkey thinks Bats is a fool for staying, but he still leaves. Batman tries to disable the cortex, but Lady Shiva attacks. Just when things look their worse, Silver Monkey comes back. Debt of honor, you know. Of course, he didn't seem to care that much for honor in all of his previous episodes.

Also, Ra's is in video conference with the mayor, governor, and police commissioner. He gives the same 'serve me or else' speech. The commissioner rejects his offer, which would be brave, except for the two ninjas behind him. The mayor and governor accept Ra's deal, although I have to wonder how they managed to get ninjas into the state capital. Wouldn't the rest of the country do something? I mean, getting the local government in your back pocket is one thing, but what about federal?

Gordon and Barbara are rushing to make it through the city when they run into the Ghosts. One thing that annoys me is when a character picks up a shotgun and pumps it. All that does is eject the shell. You would think a police Lt. would know that.

While Batman appears before Gordon and Barbara, Katana and Alfred try to break into Ra's hideout. All that gets them is a stern dressing down from the man himself. We also get a recap of the death of Katana's father, which Ra's keeps painting as being purely Alfred's fault, first blaming his cowardice then just moving into pure murder. Katana buys (apparently) and beats Alfred stupid.

Thus baited, Batman rushes back into Ra's clutches. He sets up the crime lab and let's Barbara in the system. The password? Oracle.

We end on Ra's inside Blackgate. The cell doors open (wouldn't they already be open? Or does Ra's have the ability to unlock doors with his mind?) and Ra's makes the prisoners an offer...

Next time, all the major villains return.
