Horror 2026 Countdown: The Second Civil War (1997)

The Second Civil War (1997), dir. Joe Dante, Baltimore Pictures/HBO Pictures

Boy, either this aged extremely well or not at all.

In the near future things are bad and just getting worse. Cable news ratings are at an all time high, neck and neck with depression. When India nukes Pakistan, things get worse. The President (Phil Hartman) opts to bring a few million refugees over to Idaho. Makes him look compassionate, you know? Plus more votes is always a good thing.

Pity Governor Jim Farley (Beau Bridges) opts out. Idaho doesn't have room for a million new folks, regardless of their origin. The President doesn't care, mostly because his advisor (James Coburn) doesn't care. The President orders Idaho to reopen in 67 hours. It would have been 72, but Susan Lucci's farewell episode of All My Children is airing soon.

Farley has secrets of his own, namely NewsNet reporter Christina (Elizabeth Pena). Officially he is pro-America, unofficially he is as pro-Mexican as one can get, at least enough to get her into his bed.

Things get worse with a series of bombings. Can anyone actually do anything?

Dante is in rare form and the cast is amazing.
