Mighty Joe Young (1949), dirs. Merian C. Cooper/Ernest B. Schoedsack, RKO Radio Pictures
The giant monster craze really hadn't kicked off proper yet, at least not in the United States. The old master, Willis O'Brien, was still going but there was a new kid on the stop motion block-Ray Harryhausen. This film would be the only where the two men ever worked together.
Jill Young (Lora Lee Michel) is your typical precocious scamp. Growing up on her father's plantation in Africa puts her in contact with a lot of stuff, including a baby mountain gorilla. Despite her father's protests, Jill adopts the creature and names him Joe.
12 years later
Jill (Terry Moore) is now an adult. She's unknown to Max O'Hara (Robert Armstrong) but not for long. O'Hara is a nightclub owner, and he needs a new sensation for his latest club. Since tiki bars were becoming a thing, why not a jungle theme?
To help get this off the ground, O'Hara sends Gregg (Ben Johnson) off to Africa to find exotic animals. They find one, or to be more exact, one finds them when they stumble the Young property. Joe takes a dim view on trespassers and easily drives the cowboys back.
O'Hara soon gets wind of this and declares Joe perfect for his club. After a great deal of wheeling and dealing, Jill and Joe are on their way to Hollywood. The act is a sensation., so much so Jil can't leave. The novelty for her and Joe is already wearing thin when some drunks think it would be hilarious to break into Joe's encloser and provoke the gorilla.
Somehow these nitwits survive, but the club is a wreck, and the police want Joe destroyed as soon as possible.
O'Hara feels guilty and vows to help Jill and Joe escape, but can they do it? How does a twelve-foot-tall gorilla sneak around a city?
Not bad. It could have totally gone the Kong route and ended with a morose crowd shot but it honestly almost takes a cue from Disney. This is pretty much a straight family picture before the term was coined. The effects are fine although given the pedigree I honestly expected a bit more.
