Karutha Rathrikal (1967), dir. P. Subramaniam, Neela Productions
A different take to be sure, but 1967 saw the release of the Indian take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Santham (Madhu) is a young doctor and he's engaged to be married to the lovely Vimala (K.V. Shanthi) and everything is looking great. Sure he creatures a formula that turns the host into a rampaging monster but eh, he whips up another formula to reverse it so no big deal, right?
Then his beloved uncle dies under odd circumstances. He does some digging and it turns out his uncle was murdered by his fellow bank directors. Well, that formula would come in handy about now, wouldn't it?
An interesting take, even if the Hyde make up is far more goofy than gruesome. I suppose that's the biggest fault in that Santham is too sympathetic for a Jekyll and not menacing enough Hyde.
