Horror 2026 Countdown: The Great Buddha Arrival (1934)

The Great Buddha Arrival (1934), dir. Yoshiro Edamasa, Giant Buddha Movie Factory

We end our lookback at giant monsters with what may very well be the first giant monster from Japan, or at least the earliest one on record.

A giant Buddha statue comes to life and walks around Japan.

That's pretty much it, but its goal isn't destruction, but rather suicide prevention. After walking around the countryside for a bit, it hops on a cloud and flies off towards Tokyo.

A lost film, and more's the pity. We only have scant info on this but like London After Midnight maybe a fan has more stills hidden away somewhere?
