Horror 2026 Countdown: The Lost World (1925)

The Lost World (1925), dir. Harry O. Hoyt, First National Pictures

Geoges Melies may have set the standard for special effects, but Willis O'Brien raised the bar and here we see the results.

After a brief word from author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, we zoom in to London. Edward Malone (Lloyd Hughes) is a reporter without a story. His gal pal Gladys (Alma Barrett) is most put out by this, as she wants to be married to a man of action.

She might get her wish, as renegade biologist Professor Challenger (Wallace Beery) is mounting a new expedition to South America. The professor is reluctant to bring Malone along, but changes his mind when Malone's paper offers to fund the expedition. Challenger wishes to go, both to verify his theories about a lost world existing and to find his friend Maple White. To help with that, Challenger also brings along White's daughter Paula (Bessie Love). Malone also talks his best friend Sir John Roxton (Lewis Stone), given that Roxton has hunted everything that has walked or crawled at one point.

They also bring along Professor Summerlee (Arthur Hoyt), just to act as an unbiased judge given the older man's noted distrust of Challenger.  After that the film pretty much becomes a showcase for O'Brien's special effects.

The expedition makes to the mountain without issue and even scale the plateau but once there? Dinosaurs, tons and tons of dinosaurs plus a good-sized ape man. Can the group make it back to civilzation?

The effects are, for the time, amazing. The length is a bit much but all things considered this is movie history.
