The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)

The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009) dir. Henry Saine, Outlaw Films

And now we kick off the Summer of Love(craft) III with one of the newest films to be inspired by the author, rather than based directly off a story.

Meet Jeff Phillips (Kyle Davis). He's pretty much your typical protagonist, in that he's clearly average in every possible aspect save one. Turns out Jeff is the last living relative of none other than H.P. Lovecraft. He works a boring job and hangs out with his slacker friend Charlie (Devin McGinn). All of this comes crashing when an old man breaks into their apartment and info dumps all over the rug. To wit, Jeff is the chosen one, destined to save mankind from the Old Ones, who seek pieces of a broken relic. If the relic is assembled when the stars are right, R'lyeh will rise once more and the dread Cthulhu shall rule supreme.

The Old Ones attack, proving the old man's point. Jeff and Charlie beat feet, picking up their friend Paul (Barak Hardley) on the way and trying to figure how to stop the Old Ones, stop the incursion, and save the world.

Not terrible, although I suppose that damning with faint praise. Good effects and decent acting, although Paul, well, bless Hardley's heart. He tries, but a bit too hard. Comedy-horror is a hard balance, and if you go too much in one direction you just get a mess.

Decent, but the bottom of the barrel is now becoming visible.
